Week 10
Swiss national day is August 1st. This date has been celebrated unofficially as the founding of the Swiss Confederacy since 1891, but only became officially state sanctioned in 1994. The holiday is celebrated with flags, food, and fireworks. As I was away from the states for July 4th, this provided a nice substitute.
Interestingly, there are sizeable celebrations of the Swiss national day abroad. The largest of which is in the US. Thousands attend an event held in New York City by the Swiss Benevolent Society of New York. This celebration ended in 2013, but other international celebrations include Mont Sutton, Quebec (who feature a different Swiss canton each year) and London, England.
I figure a picture of fireworks would be a nice eye-catching cover for the entry. Sadly my pictures of the fireworks in Bern were sub-par. Instead, here's a picture of fireworks in Bern that I found online
